Chita cotton - a traditional Japanese woven fabric, has been woven in the Chita Peninsula of Aichi prefecture since the Edo period. Even today, the fabric is spun using shuttle looms passed down from the Meiji period. The soft look and feel particular to Chita cotton is created by the slow pace of shuttle loom weaving.
In tussah weaving a single thread is woven vertically and layered with two thin threads horizontally to create a cotton that appears flat at first glance but whose horizontal ridges create a subtle pattern. The dense weave produces a thin, soft fabric with resilient colour.
